Nobody forgets that amazing sandwich. And if you made it, the props are yours forever. |
There's a line I'll never forget from a movie that is perfectly relevant here. In the scene, the manager of a restaurant is reprimanding his employee for something, but he says (& I'm paraphrasing here) that 'our customers can get a hamburger anywhere, but they come to [whatever] for the atmosphere and fun'.
Or something like that. The point he made is a good one, & that applies to grilling too. People expect to eat a hamburger and a hot dog at any cookout they go to. But everyone will remember that delicious barbecue salmon they had at your cookout. Or whatever it is.
There isn't much to it. Just make something that sets you apart. I mean, it isn't necessary, but look at it this way. When you have a strong reputation in any area, that increases the respect you're shown and the esteem in which you are held. And that's not a bad deal to have at all.
So, there are three ways to do it 1)Make whatever it is, but make it awesome. 2)Make something unique, and 3)Add a little flair to a certain dish. Let's look at each method.
Here's where you Win some big time props. If you're known to grill the best steak this side of Ruth's Chris, word will definitely get around town. But the truth is, it doesn't even have to be the best anyone's ever had (although that never hurts). As long as you cook whatever dish you focus on well, that can be your signature. Secret Tip: Spend a little more to get top quality meat. When you grill quality stuff, the difference is obvious.
This might just be the easiest method of all. Throw something unique on the grill. One unique thing I cook is pineapples. The family loves 'em! But that's just one example. What I'm getting at is don't be afraid to try something different. If it tastes good, then that's all that matters to anyone eating the food. In this case, different can be good. It will give your cookouts a uniqueness. That's good.
Adding flair is a great way to put your personal stamp on your cookouts. Keep in mind that you don't have to go overboard here. Something as simple as using a different spice combination on some of your meats will do just fine. Ever had Southwestern Grilled Chicken or Mesquite Grilled Brisket? If not, try it! Trust me, both are outstanding and not too weird or out there. Your folks will love it, and you'll get points for creativity. Putting a unique spin on the tried and true is fun.
And there you have it. Coming up with your own signature dish(es) is a fun way to enjoy some backyard cooking. Not to mention, the best part is that you get to eat your handiwork. After while, you'll have your signature dish or dishes in no time.
